The History of Reiki

Dr. Mikao Usui, the re-founder of what we know to be Usui Reiki, was born on August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai-mura, Kyoto, Japan.  He spoke many languages and through his studies became well versed in disciplines including medicine, theology and science.

On one occasion in 1888, Dr. Usui was carrying out a 21 day meditation at top of Mount Kurama Yama, a sacred mountain located on the northern outskirts of Kyoto.  During his deep meditation period Dr Usui received visions and instructions from Mahawalrochana Buddha, a celestial Buddha.  It is believed these instructions related to finding ancient texts outlining Buddhist healing arts.  At the end of his visions Dr. Usui became a devout Shingon Buddhist and had a strong interest in the esoteric science of healing.  Over seven years, he treated many people and taught Reiki to his followers and further developed and refined his system of healing.
